Plainedge High School

One of Newsweek’s Best

Plainedge High School is among the schools listed in Newsweek magazine’s annual coverage of “America’s Best High Schools 2010.” With an index of 1.3, Plainedge High ranks 1,249 out of approximately 67,000 public high schools in the United States. Only about 1,600 schools made Newsweek’s list. Congratulations to all of the faculty and staff and especially to the students who helped Plainedge achieve this wonderful distinction. Teachers Earn National Board Certification

Plainedge School District is proud to announce that four members of its teaching staff—John H. West Elementary School teachers Jennifer Seaman, Chris Fusaro, and Elena O'Connell, and Plainedge High School teacher Lawrence Maggio—earned the prestigious National Board Certification within the 2010-2011 school year. National Board Certification is a voluntary advanced teaching credential administered by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, and is

a well-respected achievement in the field of education. There are only approximately 74,000 teachers nationwide who hold this distinction and, out of the approximately 200,000 teachers in New York State, only 880 teachers have received this honor.

The Plainedge Union Free School District is located in Nassau County, New York. The district is comprised of five schools: three elementary schools—John H. West, Eastplain, and Charles E. Schwarting—a middle school, Plainedge Middle School, and a high school, Plainedge High School.

The Superintendent is Edward A. Salina, Jr., Ed.D., Tonie McDonald is the assistant superintendent for business and administration, and Todd Winch is the assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction. The district's Board of Education is currently comprised of President Catherine Flanagan, Vice President Maryann Capone, and trustees Debra Grieci, Dennis Gustafson, Mary Lowe, and Douglas Pascarella.

The principals of the elementary schools are Emily O'Brien (Eastplain), Carol Muscarella (John H. West) and Bethanne McCoy (Schwarting). Anthony DeRiso is the principal at Plainedge Middle School, and Robert Amster is the principal at Plainedge High School.
